A year or so after I bought a mattress that felt great in the beginning, I noticed something depressing (literally): my side of the bed had a permanent dent in the shape of me, and my wife's side looked factory fresh. I didn't do anything wrong to it. I just slept on it, like you're supposed to. I'm 6'11" and 275lbs, so my side of the mattress was working a lot harder than hers, and the foam inside simply wasn't built for the job.
If you're staring at a body impression in a mattress you bought months (not decades) ago, I want you to know two things. First, you didn't break it. Second, this was predictable — and I can show you exactly how to never buy this failure mode again.
What a body impression actually is
Mattress foam is kind of like billions of microscopic springs. Every night, the foam under your heaviest zones (usually hips and shoulders) compresses, and a few of those tiny springs snap and never return to their full height. You can't see it happening day to day. But the losses add up in exactly the spots where you always lie, and one morning you look at the bare mattress and there's a crater. Foam people call this compression set. I call it "the reason my back started hurting."
The key thing to understand: this is not wear and tear from misuse. It's a materials spec problem that was decided in the factory before you ever laid down.
Why it shows up in months instead of years
The single best predictor of compression set is foam density — how much actual material is packed into each cubic foot of foam. Low density foam is cheaper to pour, lighter to ship, and feels perfectly fine in a showroom or during a 100-night trial. It just doesn't LAST, especially under heavier bodies.
Here's the part that annoys me: manufacturers know this. Density is the number they conveniently forget to publish while they're telling you about their proprietary CloudComfort AirWhatever foam. Will the warranty cover it?
Here's a fun trick of the trade: most mattress warranties only cover impressions deeper than some threshold, commonly around 1 to 1.5 inches, measured with nobody on the bed. A 0.75 inch impression is plenty to throw your spine out of alignment and give you back pain, and it's also conveniently "within normal wear." So the warranty that sounded generous in the marketing copy often doesn't cover the exact failure you're most likely to experience. One more reason to buy the right build the first time instead of betting on the paperwork.
How to never buy this problem again
You have to look at the actual build construction, layer by layer, before you buy. I know that sounds like homework.
