Why Mattresses Sag (And How to Avoid It)

I called my mom on the phone a while back and she told me that my dad was having a lot of lower back pain. She told me that they invested in a new mattress after doing their best to research the right fit but within a few months the expensive mattress they bought had degraded and permanently sagged on my Dad's side. This threw his back out of alignment as his center of gravity sunk into the unsupportive, drooping foam!

They did all the "right" things. They went to the store and laid on the show room mattresses under the harsh bright lights trying to gauge whether each mattress felt right. My parents purchased the mattress that the sales rep recommended. It fell flat almost immediately.

Why do so many mattresses sag long before they should wear out? The most common culprit are low quality foam layers. People with lighter builds don't have to worry about this quite as much but my Dad is a big boy at 6'4" and when you're above that 200lb threshold you really need to take this seriously or you'll end up with a bad mattress situation.

Why Mattresses Sag

So why do mattresses sag? The short answer is poor mattress construction quality. It turns out that it's a heck of a lot cheaper to manufacture with cheap low density foams and it's an easy way to boost profit margins. How do you avoid getting scammed with a low quality mattress? Price is not always a good proxy for quality because there are a lot of factors including brand and store markup that can affect the price other than build quality. The mark of a high quality foam is its density metric.

The Physics of How Mattresses Sag

One way to think about mattress foam is like billions of microscopic springs. Every time you lay down on the foam it compresses and some of these springs will snap and not return to their full height. Because they're so tiny, you won't notice this right away but over time if enough of these foam springs break the cumulative effect is an indentation in the mattress that never returns to it's original position. The once supportive mattress no longer keeps your spine aligned properly and that can lead to back pain.

Firmness and Density are NOT the Same

A common misconception is that a mattress firmness rating is the only important factor when determining whether a mattress is going to be supportive for your body. Firmness is the force with which the mattress pushes back when you lay on it. Foam density is like the the number of those springs packed into the space. In the previous section I explained how mattresses degrade. If you have more of these load bearing microscopic foam strings packed into a space, they will experience less individual strain and there are a lot more to hold up your weight before the section noticeably sags.

Big and Tall People Pay Close Attention

A mattress can start out comfortable and supportive but can start to degrade over time. My parents learned this the hard way. I purchased a mattress once that felt firm and supportive but a about a year after I bought it I noticed that my side of the mattress was permanently depressed and my wife's side was fine. I take after my dad and I'm 6'11" and 275lbs and my heavier build accelerates the degradation of the mattresses I sleep on. That being said, even lighter sleepers will see their mattress decay if it's not build to snuff.
