If you only ever learn ONE number about mattresses, make it foam density. Not firmness, not coil count, not how many awards the brand won from websites you've never heard of. Density is the number that decides whether your mattress still supports you in year three, and it's the number the industry is least excited to show you.
We maintain layer-by-layer build data for every mattress in the SquishMat catalog — 200 mattresses and counting, over 670 individual foam layers — so this isn't a chart I copied from someone's marketing page. This is what's actually inside the beds people are buying.
The density chart
Density is measured in pounds per cubic foot (PCF, or lb/ft³) — literally how much material is packed into the foam. More material means more of those microscopic foam "springs" sharing your weight each night, which means the foam takes far longer to break down.

What we found inside 200 mattresses
Here's where it gets spicy. Across the mattresses we've cataloged:
- 58% of memory foam layers come in under 3.0 PCF — below the baseline we'd recommend for even an average-weight adult. The median memory foam layer in the catalog is just 2.5 PCF.
- 56% of polyfoam layers come in under 1.8 PCF, and 80% are under the 2.2 PCF floor we recommend for sleepers over 200 lbs.
- 76% of mattresses have at least one foam layer below baseline. Some of these are otherwise well-built beds where a thin transition layer runs cheap — not every below-baseline layer is a dealbreaker. But it tells you how much of the market is quietly shaving material.
This is why "it has memory foam!" tells you nothing. A 1.8 PCF memory foam and a 4.0 PCF memory foam are the same material the way a paper plate and cast iron pan are both dishes.
Firmness and density are NOT the same thing
I will repeat this until my keyboard wears out because it's the single most expensive confusion in mattress shopping. Firmness is how hard the mattress pushes back when you lie on it TODAY. Density is how much material is in the foam, which predicts whether it still pushes back in three years. Manufacturers can (and do!) make firm mattresses out of cheap low-density foam. It feels supportive in the showroom, then develops a body impression under whoever sleeps on it most heavily. How to actually use this chart
In theory: find the spec sheet for every mattress you're considering, identify the material and density of every layer, and check each one against the table for your body weight. In practice, half the industry hides density behind proprietary foam names, and digging out the real numbers is genuinely tedious. (Trust me. It's kind of our whole thing.)
