I run hot at night. My wife steals the covers precisely because I don't want them anywhere near me after about 2am. And at 6'11" and 275lbs, I've learned the hard way that most "cooling mattress" advice is written for people half my size — because for bigger sleepers, sleeping hot isn't really a fabric problem. It's a physics problem.
If you're a heavier sleeper who wakes up in a puddle, this article is for you. And fair warning: the answer is mostly NOT the gel-infused whatever the ads keep showing you.
Why heavier sleepers sleep hotter (it's not just you)
Two things happen when a bigger body lies on a mattress. First, you generate and hold more heat — more body, more furnace. Second, and this is the part nobody explains: you sink deeper into the comfort layers. The deeper you sink, the more mattress material wraps around you, the less of your body is exposed to moving air, and the more heat gets trapped between you and the foam.
That second point is why cooling for heavy sleepers is really a SUPPORT question in disguise. A mattress that holds you up near the surface keeps you cooler than one you sink into like a hug from a space heater — even if the sinky one has a fancier cover.
What actually keeps a heavier sleeper cool
In rough order of how much it matters:
- A coil support core. A hybrid with a real pocketed-coil unit is mostly air, and air moves. Thick all-foam builds are insulation by construction — great for coolers, bad for you. This is the single biggest lever, and conveniently, sturdy coils are also what your weight needs for durability anyway.

- Latex comfort layers. Latex has an open cell structure, doesn't hug like memory foam, and (bonus for us bigger folks) essentially doesn't take compression set. It costs more, but it's the premium answer to both heat AND durability.
- Breathable covers — phase-change fabrics, TENCEL, wool. These are real, but they're the seasoning, not the meal. A phase-change cover on a 12-inch slab of dense memory foam is a screen door on a submarine.
What doesn't work (sorry)
Gel infusions, copper infusions, graphite infusions... the infusion aisle is mostly marketing. These can shift heat for the first few minutes, which is exactly long enough for a showroom impression or a positive first-night review. Over a full night, under a heavier body sunk deep into foam, the infused foam is just as saturated with your heat as the regular kind. If a mattress's entire cooling story is an adjective in the foam name, keep scrolling.
Thick memory foam builds deserve a special warning for heavy sleepers. Memory foam softens as it warms — that's how it contours. Under a bigger, warmer body, that means you sink deeper as the night goes on, which traps more heat, which softens the foam more. You get to be the star of your own little thermal doom loop.
